Dahlia was enjoying her life, balancing her time between the animal rescue shelter she owned with her best friend, and the local Circle of witches. But there’s something lurking in the woods, townsfolk are leaving in droves, and now Dahlia feels like she’s being hunted. Her life is flipped upside down in a matter of hours as she discovers a new manifestation of her powers, a cocky stranger with shape shifting abilities throws himself in her path, and she comes face to face with true evil.
-->
Will her new power be enough to help destroy the enemy? Can she find the answers in the mysterious books left to her by her witch grandmother? And should she follow her attraction for the new guy, or will it all end in disaster?

Liam sat at her kitchen table with his feet propped on another chair. Ravenna paced between the two long benches. Dahlia sat on the floor, leaning against the wall with her knees to her chest and her face in her hands, gripping her hair so tight her face was beginning to go numb. She knew magic was real; hell, she lived and breathed it every single day. But Hell? Demons? And witches with the power to change form, witches like Liam? It was too much to take in.
The clock chimed, announcing the time was now seven o’clock. They’d been talking for an hour and a half, Liam telling them his story while Ravenna tried to rebuke it as nothing more than fantasy. Dahlia hadn’t spoken a word as conflicting emotions and thoughts warred inside her. The rational part of her that her staunch atheist parents had tried to hammer into her cried out against what Liam was saying. Not possible! He’s lying! But the part of her that always came through, the witch she’d always been, much to the pain of her parents and the joy of her grandmother, that part knew that what he was saying was truth. Too many strange things had happened in this town for her to
not believe it.
“If what you’re saying is true,” Ravenna’s voice interrupted her inner storm, “then why have we never seen anything like this before?”
“I think we have, Ravenna. We just didn’t realize it, didn’t want to believe.” Dahlia raised her head and stared at the woman she’d been friends with since they were crawling.
“There has always been something strange about this town. Most of the people here are regular, every day humans, yes. But there’s something here that calls to us witches.”
“That’s one thing, Dahlia. But Liam is talking about mythical beasts. Hell beasts, no less! What’s next, dragons?”
“Actually-” Liam raised his hand to interject.
“Oh no, dog boy, you are not telling me that dragons
exist! My head can’t take it.”
“Ravenna, come on. How else do you explain those odd screeches we used to hear in the forest when we went camping? And there is no way the flapping of leathery wings that we heard belonged to bats. They don’t get that big.” Dahlia hesitated, and as a new thought hit her, her eyes widened. She looked at Liam, almost afraid of the
answer. “They don’t, do they? Giant bats aren’t real, right?”
“Giant bats aren’t real, no. Don’t worry about that, love. Dragons, though…”
Dahlia shook her head in disbelief.
“They’re no bigger than an average sized car and they don’t breathe fire. At least not all of them.”
Ravenna glared at him.
“Not unless they’re backed into a corner. Really, they’re no harm unless they’re frightened, I promise.”
Dahlia dropped her head on to her knees and moaned. “This can’t be happening. I must be dreaming. I’m still at the shelter, in the courtyard having my break. I’ve fallen asleep
and I’m dreaming. That’s it. This is all just a dream I’m going to wake up from any minute now. Ow!” She lifted her head. “What was that for?”
Liam was crouched in front of her, his fingers still poised above a now red and tender spot on her arm. “You’re awake, love. No amount of pinching will change that. This is
all real.”
“We have to call the Circle. They need to be informed and allowed to make the choice to decide if they want to stay and fight, or flee and be safe.”
“You’re saying you believe me now?” Liam lowered himself to the floor next to Dahlia.
Ravenna pursed her lips. “I don’t want to. But Dahlia is right. We’ve always known there has been something else out there. If this hell beast you’ve been chasing has really
come to town, we need to stop it.”
“How?” Dahlia barely recognized her own voice, as soft and raspy as it was.
Her best friend sighed and shrugged. “That I don’t know. That’s why we need the Circle. Hopefully, with those who choose to stay, we’ll be able to find a solution.”
Liam slapped his knee, and Dahlia couldn’t help but think of an oversized leprechaun, he looked so gleeful.
“Well that’s settled then. Let’s get this Circle around and hatch out a plan.”
“Not so fast, dog boy. They don’t trust outsiders. We need to talk to them first. They’re expecting to meet us in the forest in an hour.”
“They can’t go into the forest. They’ll be easy prey there.”
“Ravenna, we have to call them and get every one of them here.”
“Right. Guess we’d better grab our cell phones then and start dialing.”
Dahlia closed her eyes and uttered a prayer to the Goddess. Please don’t let us miss any of them. Please see that all our witches arrive here safely!

Howdy from Down Under! I’m Paranormal author Phoenix Johnson, so excited to be here, though I’m not great at talking about myself. So if I wonder off on a tangent, don’t mind me, I’ll get back on track eventually, and if not, just click your fingers, I’ll come back!

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve been a writer on and off since I was a little kid, though I had drifted away from writing for a few years. I returned
to writing in 2010, before publishing my debut novella in 2013 through Naughty Nights Press. I’ve always loved reading. The ability to create new worlds and people was exciting, so it seemed only natural that I try my hand at creating my own.

How did you come up with this storyline?
I was originally writing this for another group project, but stress got the better of me and I had to withdraw. It seemed a perfect fit in this set, so I gleefully completed it, excited to delve in to a tale with demons, witches and shifters, 3 of my favourite paranormal creatures.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
The worst aspect, for me, is being at mercy of my fickle muse. I have so many ideas, but my muse is so fickle! I’m hoping to whip her in to action this year, though.
My favourite aspect, though, is definitely a tie between the thrill of building worlds and characters, and the joy of new
readers letting me know they enjoy the worlds and characters I write about. It never gets old to be told others love them as much as I do.

What inspires you to write?
To be honest, I don’t have a single thing, which makes it frustrating sometimes. It can be as simple as a beat or line of a song, or as convoluted as a scene in a book combined with a line from a tv show or movie and a whimsical thought as I drift off to sleep. I take my inspiration where I can get it.

How did you conduct your research for The Demon, The Witch and The Firebird?
A lot of it is purely fictional, or came from my own interest and experience with witches, both in fiction and those I
know who hold the Wiccan faith. I did, however, have a search on names databases for names of characters, as well as a search for deities suitable to aid in the myth of the Firebird. I don’t want to give too much away, though.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from The Demon, The Witch and The Firebird?
“Oh no, dog boy, you are not telling me that dragons exist! My head can’t take it.” (Ravenna speaking to Liam)

Right now, however, her rational mind simply shrugged its shoulders, as if to say Girl, you were just thinking about
his maleness, so don’t even think of using me as an excuse. (Dahlia and her inner voice)

Dahlia thought back to one of her Gamma’s stories about the strength of family, a bond made not just from blood, but by choice of one’s heart. (Something we can all learn from. Something I know from experience)

Any more Favorites from The Demon, The
Witch and The Firebird:
“Well? Are you going to join me for a shower, where I promise I will tell you about a goddess long thought to be
myth, or are you going to become a rather tall garden gnome? Because I have to be honest, I hate garden gnomes.” (Dahlia to Liam)

What would your friends say is your best quality?
I think that would probably be the fact that I listen and don’t judge. I’m always happy to listen when my friends have a problem, and will offer advice if they want it, without making them feel judged. That’s not what I’m there for. I’m there to listen and help.

Are reader reviews important to you? Why?
They are important to me. Not because of ego or such. I use reviews as a way to learn what the readers want, what they
like and dislike, and to always keep improving. Reviews can be a great source of feedback.

What do you do when you don’t write? Like in “Real Life”
When I’m not writing, it’s safe to assume I’m doing something nerdy, whether it be reading or watching a movie or tv show. I do however enjoy going to the gym, as much as I hurt afterwards. And when I do have some extra cash, I love getting new tattoos. I enjoy the sensation. Of course, this is all between family time, which includes the furry
and slithery members (1 cat, 2 dogs, 3 snakes).

Tell us about your other books?
I tend to focus on the paranormal, which is pretty clear with werewolves, vampires, shifters and witches. Not that there is anything wrong with that, of course.
My Wolf Smitten trilogy is a sweet tale of two neighbors finding each other and overcoming some pretty big disasters, two of which includes exes coming back to haunt them!
The Return of Their Master is about 4 Vampire sisters making a life for themselves until their disease-crazed
creator, Vitalis, tracks them down and threatens their very existence.
Persephone is a sweet fantasy that has similar starting tones to Beauty and The Beast, but doesn’t take long to swing to its own path of Angels, Earth Mages, and Witches both Dark and Light.

Then there is Kitune’s Raven, a shifter
trilogy based in Japan between two warring families. Yes, it may sound like Romeo and Juliet at first, but I promise you there are no teenage hormones that get other people killed. Just two lovers determined to bring peace to their
clans. I’m working on The Dark Winter now, and it will be completed with Sakura’s Homecoming.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I think it’s pretty obvious that I’m a huge nerd. (I know, I know, the technical term is geek, but since I am actually
pretty smart as well, as far as I’m concerned, I get to choose which I prefer.) I love Tolkien, Whedon and Rowling, I’m slightly (giggle) obsessed with Supernatural, I ship HarleyPool, and frankly, I need to meet such pop culture
icons as John Barrowman, Joss Whedon, Robert Downey Jr (RDJ is the only Sherlock for me!), Summer Glau and Alyson Hannigan. Of course the list is much longer than that, but I would geek the F out meeting any of them. It is my goal
to at least meet 10 of my geek heroes and heroines!

I am one of those who actually struggle to talk about themselves, so while I probably do have a lot more I could say, I’m drawing a blank so I should scoot before I start babbling. I come up with some pretty strange things once I start babbling, it’s actually pretty ridiculous, and even my inner voice is wondering what the heck I’m talking about and how I got on to that topic.
What was I saying?
Ummm… Hmmm… *wanders off to chase the fairies*
Oh, right! I hope you’ve learned some interesting and new things about me! And I can’t wait to start seeing reviews
about this awesome boxset!

-->Phoenix Johnson has always been intrigued by the written word. Even when she was a young girl, she usually had her nose stuck in at least one book, and her need to read would drive her to peruse the back of the same cereal box each morning at breakfast. Paranormal and fantasy captured her heart, with tales about dragons, magic, and fanciful creatures sweeping her away to a wonderful new world where she felt she truly belonged. While she dabbled in writing while in primary school, it wasn’t until high school that she decided she should try her hand at writing her own book, and even gave poetry a try.
She wandered away from writing for a few years, but was soon encouraged to return and, within months of picking up the proverbial pen, Phoenix’ first story, The Wolf In The Neighborhood, was accepted for publication by Naughty Nights Press. While working on the rest of the Wolf Smitten Trilogy, Phoenix decided to take on a university degree, and is now in the final stretch of her Bachelor of Art’s degree in Professional Writing and Publishing, with plans to continue on to her Master’s degree.
In early 2015, Phoenix was thrilled to discover she’d made two Top 5 lists with three entries in the Easychair Bookstore Awards. In June, it was announced she had placed first in Best Paranormal with Once Bitten Twice Shy, the second installment in her Wolf Smitten Trilogy, while The Wolf In The Neighborhood and Wolf Smitten placed third in their respective categories of Best Paranormal and Best Series.
With her inclusion in the Alphas on the Prowl Box Set in 2015, Phoenix hit the top 100 bestsellers lists across numerous distributors, number 1 bestseller on several Amazon lists, and this was quickly followed by the announcement of her achievement of number 1 bestseller for her publisher, Naughty Nights Press, for the full year of 2015. The awards and achievements have only served to strengthen her ambitions, and she is now aiming at reaching the bestseller lists for USA Today and New York Times.
While 2016 was a quiet year for her as she finished her Bachelor of Arts degree, Phoenix is diving in to 2017 headfirst and is excited to see what the year holds for her, both in her personal life as well as her professional writing career.
